Bill renames highway in memory of U.S. Rep. Broomfield

The Michigan House Committee on Transportation, Mobility, and Infrastructure on Tuesday unanimously approved state Rep. Mark Tisdel’s plan to dedicate a highway in tribute to a long-time national and state legislator from Oakland County.

Tisdel’s House Bill 4705 honors William S. Broomfield, a Royal Oak native who served as state representative from 1949-1954, state senator from 1955-1956, and U.S. congressman from 1957-1993. While in the U.S. House of Representatives, Broomfield served on the key Foreign Affairs Committee, and he was the longest actively serving Republican representative prior to his retirement. Broomfield passed away in 2019 at the age of 96.

“From the Michigan Legislature to the U.S. Congress, William S. Broomfield was a titan for Oakland County,” said Tisdel, R-Rochester Hills. “Congressman Broomfield had a record of working across the aisle to strengthen our nation and its people — especially the people of our community. My legislation will dedicate a portion of Rochester Road in honor of this long-time public servant from our area.”

HB 4705 would dedicate the “William S. Broomfield Memorial Highway” on a stretch of M-150, also known as Rochester Road, from the Tienken Road intersection south to the intersection with M-59.

The bill now proceeds to the full House of Representatives for consideration.
