A House resolution introduced by Rep. Dave Prestin to declare January 2023 as Firefighter Cancer Awareness Month in the state of Michigan was adopted by the House.

“Today, I proudly introduced House Resolution 10 to declare January 2023 as Firefighter Cancer Awareness Month in Michigan,” said Prestin, of Cedar River. “This is an issue very near to my heart. As a fellow first responder in my community, I know firsthand how dangerous this occupation can be. Occupational cancer is the leading cause of line-of-duty deaths in the fire service due to inevitable carcinogen exposure, claiming about 75% of the names added to the International Association of Fire Fighter’s ‘Fallen Fire Memorial’ wall in 2022. I applaud my colleagues for approving this significant measure.”

Rep. Prestin is a first responder in his community, serving 13 years as a volunteer firefighter for the Cedarville Fire Department – a role he proudly maintains today. He also served as a hospital-based paramedic fulfilling both emergency room, as well as 911 duties for the Bay Area Hospital.

House Resolution 10 received overwhelming bipartisan support.
