A plan from state Rep. Jay DeBoyer honoring a military hero from Chesterfield Township was unanimously advanced today by the Michigan House.

House Bill 4154 designates a portion of M-3 in the township as the Senior Chief Petty Officer Jason P. May Memorial Highway.

Born and raised in Chesterfield Township, Officer May bravely served in the United States Navy for 18 years. He passed away unexpectedly at age 38 in June of 2015 while aboard the U.S.S. Essex, an amphibious assault ship which served in part of Operation Enduring Freedom.

“This is a way to further honor Officer May’s memory and his service to both our country and our state. We are one step closer to making this tribute a reality,” said DeBoyer, of Clay Township. “Our military heroes put their lives on the line for us, and I am incredibly thankful for their continued courage.”

The Michigan Memorial Highway Act was enacted in 2001 and allows for the naming of bridges and highways within the state. HB 4154 now moves to the Senate for further consideration.
