State Rep. Joseph Fox today secured passage of his House Bill 4024, the Student Restroom Privacy Act. Fox’s plan, if signed into law, will safeguard students’ privacy and ensure safety in Michigan schools.

House Bill 4024 requires that multiple-occupancy restrooms, locker rooms, changing areas, and showers in schools be used only by people based on their biological sex. Fox said the legislation is about protecting young students and giving parents peace of mind.

“No little child should feel unsafe or exposed in a place designed for privacy and dignity,” Fox said. “This should be a commonsense law. Everyone wants to protect our children from harm, especially in the most vulnerable spaces at school. Those areas are the bathrooms, locker rooms, and changing areas.”

Fox highlighted that his plan is designed to ensure dignity and safety for all students.

“Parents trust schools to protect their children when they drop them off in the morning, and they trust their state leaders to look after their needs and empower schools to do the right thing,” Fox said. “This bill gives schools the clear policy they need to uphold that responsibility. Our sons, daughters, and grandchildren deserve nothing less.”

House Bill 4024 was approved by the Michigan House and now advances to the Senate for further consideration.
