State Rep. Timmy Beson on Tuesday secured House passage of legislation that would eliminate unnecessary fees on Michigan food trucks and create a consistent statewide safety standard for mobile food establishments.

House Bill 5450, sponsored by Beson, prevents local governments from imposing additional fees, taxes, or assessments on food trucks operating in their communities. The bill is part of a two-bill package with Rep. Joe Aragona that also establishes a uniform fire safety inspection standard across the state.

Beson said the legislation ensures food truck owners can focus on running their businesses instead of navigating a patchwork of local rules and charges.

“Food truck owners are hardworking small businesspeople who are just trying to earn a living,” said Beson (R-Bay City). “Right now, every time they cross into a new city or township, they can get hit with another fee, another charge, or another rule. Sometimes those fees add up to hundreds or even thousands of dollars depending on the municipality. That’s not right.”

Beson said the plan removes those extra costs while ensuring safety standards remain in place.

“Our plan creates clear and consistent rules across Michigan,” Beson said. “Safety inspections will still happen, but food truck operators won’t have to jump through different hoops everywhere they go. These folks just want to work and make a living. The state should not make it harder than it has to be.”

House Bills 5450 and 5451 now advance to the Senate for further consideration.
