State Rep. Joseph Pavlov recently voted in support of legislation ensuring certified nurse practitioners can once again help patients obtain disability parking placards and related permits, reducing unnecessary delays and improving access to care.
House Bill 5644 allows certified nurse practitioners, physical therapists, and occupational therapists to sign applications for disability parking placards, special registration plates, and free parking stickers. The change comes after a recent Secretary of State policy update barred nurse practitioners from signing the forms, creating additional hurdles and delays for patients seeking assistance.
“Nurse practitioners are highly trained medical professionals who regularly evaluate patients and determine disabilities as part of their everyday work,” said Pavlov (R-Smiths Creek). “This bill recognizes that reality and helps people get the services they need without unnecessary delays.”
Pavlov noted that many communities across Michigan continue to face shortages of physicians, making nurse practitioners an increasingly important part of the health care system.
“When physician availability is limited, nurse practitioners are often the providers patients see most regularly,” Pavlov said. “Allowing them to sign these forms helps reduce wait times, eases pressure on physicians, and ensures residents with disabilities can access the accommodations they qualify for in a timely manner.”
The bill passed the House with bipartisan support and now advances for further consideration.
