State Rep. Ann Bollin, R-Brighton Township, today issued the following statement after today’s Consensus Revenue Estimating Conference projected that revenue coming into the state will fall:
“These numbers confirm what we have been preparing for: tighter revenues and the need for continued fiscal discipline. They also reaffirm that we were prudent with our approach to the 2025-26 budget by going through it line by line and cutting waste, fraud, and abuse.
“Last year, we made the tough but responsible decisions to rein in spending, cut waste, and refocus taxpayer dollars on core priorities like roads and essential services. We reduced pork projects, eliminated ghost employees, and began restoring fiscal discipline to state government after years of reckless spending by Democrats. That work matters now more than ever.
“At the same time, these numbers also reflect something positive: Michigan families are keeping more of their own hard-earned money thanks to responsible tax cuts that are making life more affordable. Those tax cuts were the right thing to do for families, and they require state government to live within its means, just like Michigan families have had to do over the past few years.
“As we head into the next budget cycle, there will be difficult choices ahead, and we will need to make government operate even more efficiently. I am confident there is still more waste to cut and more ways to make state government work better for taxpayers, and that effort is worth it because it keeps Michigan more affordable for the people who live here.
“Since becoming chair, I’ve taken a different approach to the budget than others did before me. I’ve committed to going line by line through the budget and asking hard questions about what programs serve taxpayers and which ones don’t. I’m committed to continuing that work and to collaborating with colleagues on both sides of the aisle to make responsible decisions that keep Michigan on solid financial footing.”
